Remember Emilio’s session? Well today we will take you behind the scenes! Just a peek at what happens before and during a newborn photo session. Every photographer is different but we have important details to cover on each and every session in order for it to be as much as a success as possible, like creating an atmosphere of comfort for mom, dad and the family that may be accompanying them that day (yummy snacks always seems to help 😉 ). Most dads take a little nap while we snap away with their little bundle, and that means they are relaxed enough (and yes, quite tired).
Newborn Photo Session Must: The right Temperature
First, prior to having everyone over, we make sure to warm the room and specially where the baby will be posed, it has to be VERY warm, like, sweaty kinda warm. Just imagine, babies are used to momma’s warm belly, so we must have a warm setting for them to relax and help them sleep through the session!
Newborn Photo Session must: Safety First!
No matter what pose we are going to do, what prop are we using… Safety always comes first!! A helping hand is always in close distance to baby, just like in this picture, Luis is ready to take his hand off Emilio so I can snap the picture quickly, but we never ever leave baby unattended. Safety is our priority, and it should be everyone’s priority, no matter who your photographer is.
Newborn Photo Session Must: Lunch break!
Oh yes, mom and dad will have snacks and have free time while we take care of the little one here, just look how comfortable Emilio is, completely spread out, which means the correct temperature has been achieved and he’s all warm! Every now and then, we will take little lunch breaks if baby asks for them! A full belly means a sleepy baby, and that is why we schedule newborn sessions on days when mom and dad have nothing else on their calendar, since the average session takes around 2 to 3 hours. We don’t want to rush it, some babies will sleep through all the session, and some will take some time to fall asleep, and some simply will be awake and fuzzy! So we need to be patient with our little stars.
See? Now here I’m positioning Emilio, moving his body as a whole and then I will proceed to move his hand and put him in a comfortable position to have Luis reach to him so I can snap the shot. Safety, as always, is the priority!
Little Accidents, every newborn session has them
So, when you think about changing diapers, that means there was a diaper to begin with, right? Well… During most newborn sessions there a little time gap where baby will go bare naked, usually for family pictures, and then… You get peed on, or pooped. Yep. We are used to it, but family members always get the best reactions! You can’t help but laugh out loud when you start feeling the warmth running down your arm, ha!
And here you can see: Emilio did a little number on his grandma! Her white shirt got all wet, but we managed to snap some shots without it being noticeable. The show must go on! But this is normal, you need to expect it, after all we are working with a baby on a full belly… What goes in, must go out hehe!
In the end it is all worth it, we get to capture the details, the connections, and the moments that otherwise would just be a blur lost in the tired days ahead for this new family.
We want to share with you Emilio’s final slideshow, since now you have seen his Behind The Scenes and intimate little moments happening during his newborn photo session, this is the final product, enjoy! (Oh and this video includes his Fresh48 session too!)
